2006 Mission La Caminade Cahors

Posted on October 20, 2009 - Filed Under French wines, Malbec, Red wines, Reviews, Wine Reviews, region, style | Leave a Comment

This French malbec added some very nice vine, green pepper, and acidity with bright fruits, stone and a floral nose. Tastier than one might expected from an imported $11 French Malbec.

Now this wine I like!

Good round, rich flavor, with the hints of earth and spice that I really enjoy in a malbec. A gem @ 14.99.

2002 Norton Malbec

Justin says: Tastes like clay. Tasty, grapey clay. See, I don’t see what people see in reds. They’re fine. Bitter. Enjoyable. But where’s the pizzazz? The wham-bam-thank you-ma’am? This is, in truth, a very enjoyable wine, but I like Chardonnays. So blow me!

Brandy says, “Thick and rich with dark plums and warm hues” (she really said this!) “Reds rock and bring warm love to the world—very earthy and challenging for the sophisticated palate.” (Was that a dig?)

Russ says: Nota bene: I am biased towards Argentine Malbec. Tastes like clay? Well, la tierra del Argentina is fine by me. Qualities to look for in a Malbec: earthy, non-bitter (read: Spanish), not sweet (read: Shiraz), clears the palate quickly—this wine has these qualities, but not in spades. Good for the money, so give me a sharp, hard cheese.

Navarro Malbec

Justin says: Wow! The muthahfuckin’ malbec. Sweet, earthy, round. No wonder the Spanish rarely get syphilis! This officially transitions me to what historians will call “The Red Period.”

Russ says: I love the flavor of velvet earth, if by velvet earth you mean a great goddamned Malbec. This is Malbec country—the wine the Iberians wish they could make. Give me a better $10 Malbec, and I’ll be a happy, surprised, slightly drunk man, and I’ll cheers to you.

Shelby says: A fine example of why I love Argentine wines. A delightful combination of sweet earthiness, neither too sweet nor too earthy, where I think of mushrooms or the fungus/moss that grows on the north side of tree trunks.
