I really liked this wine! Mocha, dark berries, cloves…a really excellent California Tempranillo!

Ugh, I feel like shit today. I popped half a muscle relaxant, but I’m hungover, confused, and perhaps depressed. Fuck it. This is the wine with the rooster on the label, and its a great buy. Dark, smooth, plummy with a hint of leathery chocolate. Not too complex, but I’ll take it. Bring on the weekend!

1999 Mayo Family Winery Zinfandel

Holy motherfucking shit! I wondered when I might find the A-list wine. Turns out I just had to spend more money! Russ leaves town, and it is a time to be wistful, but also a time to celebrate! This tastes like cranberry sauce, raspberry jam, and the Sunday mornings at Grandma’s house I never had all rolled into something that will get me drunk. What’s not to love? Bon voyage, Russ. Until we meet again….

Russ says: The last time I sat at this table (editor’s note: my friend Ben’s house in West Austin) drinking expensive wine, it was a $50 Napa Pinot Noir. That bottle was Magic Johnson; this one is James Worthy. Wholly necessary to the experience, but a role player who knows he’s the key to the goddamned system. I love it! Spend the money for special occasions and drink with a smile on your face. A, and a fucking solid A.

2002 Kendall Jackson Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under American wines, Chardonnay, Reviews, White wines, Wine Reviews, region, style | Leave a Comment

With Michael Jackson’s child molestation charges making headlines, its nice to see one of the Jackson clan doing something worthwhile. Kendall, who originally played trombone for the group, has transcended his musical beginnings to become quite a well-established wine-maker.

The vitner’s reserve manages to be full, fruity, but not sickeningly sweet. A nice wine for the money. It settles in the back of the thoat, to create a nice buttery finish. Maybe a little tangy, but a nice wine, nonetheless. Now if only Tito could work on that vodka…

2001 Guy Buffet Cellars Chardonnay

Can wine truly be refreshing, lemony, and citrusy? Can one ever truly be honest and compassionate? Why do fat girls enjoy oral sex so much more than skinny ones? This wine attempts to answer one of these questions…

A spring bouquet of vibrant fruit. Its buttery, lemony, and oaky. How does it do it? This is a good mid-grade summer wine. As it breathes, the butter takes over. Solid wine. Look out, Napa; Paso Robles is on the map!

Geyser Peak Sauvignon Blanc

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under American wines, Reviews, Sauvignon Blanc, Uncategorized, White wines, Wine Reviews, region, style | Leave a Comment

This is the quintessential Sauvignon Blanc. Fruity, crisp, cheap(!), delicious. Highly quaffable. The perfect wine when its FUCKING 100 DEGREES OUTSIDE FOR THE TWENTIETH DAY IN A ROW!!!

(note: For those would-be etymologists out there, the word quintessential is derived from the latin term meaning ‘Fifth Essence’, which is meant to denote the fifth element (apart from Earth, Water, Air, and Fire) that embodies the celestial, heavenly perfection that exists above the moon). Nice, huh?
