2000 Valley of the Moon Zinfandel

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under Red wines, Reviews, Wine Reviews, Zinfandel, style | Leave a Comment

I discovered zinfandel last night…not to be confused with white zinfandel, its faggier variety. Tonight we welcome back our old friends at Valley of the Moon. I taste good chocolate, plum, and blackberry. Its dark, but lacking the beefiness. No real issues with this wine.

Brandy, making her triumpant return, says, “Like a raspberry-filled chocolate truffle in the gold wrapper.”

2002 Toasted Head Chardonnay

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under American wines, Chardonnay, Reviews, White wines, Wine Reviews, region, style | Leave a Comment

This tastes a lot like the Founder’s Estate bottle. Maybe not as full, but I like it. I am tempted to say it gets better as it breathes. Buttery, caramel undertones. Long-lasting finish. I would buy this wine again.

Brandy says, “I’m going to Norm’s to do my taxes.”

2003 Pepi Sauvignon Blanc

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under Reviews, Sauvignon Blanc, White wines, Wine Reviews | Leave a Comment

This is a truly yummy summer wine you can drink by the bottle. More honeysuckle than fruit, this lacks the crispness of some sav’s, but makes up for it with floral oakiness, with a hint of Macintosh apple.

Brandy says, “Like a crisp, tart, green apple turnover. Reminds me of champagne, but that could just be my period talking….”

Upon further reflection, Brandy tastes lime. Rancid lime…

2002 Norton Malbec

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under Malbec, Reviews, South American wines, Wine Reviews, region, style | Leave a Comment

Justin says: Tastes like clay. Tasty, grapey clay. See, I don’t see what people see in reds. They’re fine. Bitter. Enjoyable. But where’s the pizzazz? The wham-bam-thank you-ma’am? This is, in truth, a very enjoyable wine, but I like Chardonnays. So blow me!

Brandy says, “Thick and rich with dark plums and warm hues” (she really said this!) “Reds rock and bring warm love to the world—very earthy and challenging for the sophisticated palate.” (Was that a dig?)

Russ says: Nota bene: I am biased towards Argentine Malbec. Tastes like clay? Well, la tierra del Argentina is fine by me. Qualities to look for in a Malbec: earthy, non-bitter (read: Spanish), not sweet (read: Shiraz), clears the palate quickly—this wine has these qualities, but not in spades. Good for the money, so give me a sharp, hard cheese.

2004 Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc

Nice wine, especially for ten bucks. Very intense grapefruit. Nice, tart summery wine. Quaffable! Even when not chilled, its still great, cause its so tart. Delicious!

Brandy says, “The elixer of life, nurturing the dry ivy of my soul, in the hot days of June.”

Drink on, Brandy, drink on……

2001 Llano Texas Chardonnay

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under Chardonnay, Reviews, Texas wines, White wines, Wine Reviews, region, style | Leave a Comment

I finally relented and tried a Texas Chardonnay, cause I have pride and stuff. And its good! First wine that I really taste apple. Green apple. Like a jolly rancher. Nice springtime wine. Brandy likes it more than I do.

Brandy says, “Its nice to know that you’re obsessed with women’s body types now.” Caramel and apple undertones. Unique, much like the Lone Star State itself.

2002 Hangtime Pinot Noir

Brandy’s back! A pungent aroma. I like this wine. Its mild, pleasant. A good deep-dish pizza wine. Brandy says, “I feel a *pop* in my mouth. This would be good with a carpaccio.”

Later… “What’s a carpaccio?”

2002 Ghost Gum Chardonnay

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under Australian wines, Reviews, Sauvignon Blanc, White wines, Wine Reviews, region, style | Leave a Comment

Damn, I dig this wine! Sweeter than one might expect, but there’s an underlying oakiness that keeps it from slipping into $4 hangover territory. Yummy! Australia: More than kangaroos and Midnight Oil, apparently.

Brady says, “I saw a lot of ugly prostitutes one time…”
Brandy also says, “A waterfall of flavor!”

Destino Chardonnay

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under American wines, Chardonnay, Reviews, White wines, Wine Reviews, region, style | Leave a Comment

Ah, Chardonnay. Why have I treated thee so cruelly? Relegated to back-shelf status, while your burgundy cousins shoulder and strut their way to my haughty palette, you are a picture of grace. You bent, dear Chardonnay, but you did not break. And now, it is I who am shamed. For this Chardonnay is wonderful.

It reminds me of everything I used to like about you. Long-lasting, complex finish with aromas of banana and honeysuckle. Peach originally, blending into a floral honey taste that lasts longer than most orgasms. A little bitter at the end, but what isn’t. All in all, a great bet, and a good buy even for $20. Use it during movie night, but only if that movie is Oscar-worthy! Brandy says, “Like a melon with a little bit of cayenne pepper. Like how Mexicans eat fruit.”

2000 La Crema Pinot Noir

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under American wines, Pinot Noir, Red wines, Reviews, Wine Reviews, region, style | Leave a Comment

This…wine…fucking…RULES! Fruity, creamy, incredible. The only thing hurting this wine are the joyful tears I openly wept into the glass upon my first sip. Brandy says, “My brother cut his finger off today.”

Upon reflection, and much later, I thought, “Whoa, his finger?!”
