2002 Yalumba Shiraz

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under Australian wines, Red wines, Reviews, Syrah, Wine Reviews, region, style | Leave a Comment

This is my 2nd Shiraz, so its time to start making generalizations. Definite plum & blackberry there, with a hint of Spanish clay. The thing about reds is that they’re all pretty good, but I have a hard time distinguishing between them. Its hard to imagine a red that’s gonna blow my mind. Time will tell, I suppose…

2002 Valley of the Moon Chardonnay

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under American wines, Chardonnay, Reviews, White wines, Wine Reviews, style | Leave a Comment

Ah, thank God. Now this is a Chardonnay I can dip my balls in! Buttery taste that lasts without being overpowering or too biting. Not very fruity, but if you dig caramel, vanilla, or butter in your chardonnay, this is a good bet. If you’re trying to show some chick why Chardonnay is superior to Pinot Grigot or some other such fluff, cart this baby out of the cellar. Valley of the moon, indeed!

2002 Toasted Head Chardonnay

This tastes a lot like the Founder’s Estate bottle. Maybe not as full, but I like it. I am tempted to say it gets better as it breathes. Buttery, caramel undertones. Long-lasting finish. I would buy this wine again.

Brandy says, “I’m going to Norm’s to do my taxes.”

2002 Texas Hills Tre Paesano

Oooh…cherry! Bing cherry! Its tart, but in a good way. I really like this wine. Its red, and not too sweet, but refreshing nonetheless. It does get a little sour at time, but so does spoiled milk, and everyone LOVES spoiled milk.

2002 Rex Goliath Central Coast Merlot

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under American wines, Merlot, Reviews, Wine Reviews, style | Leave a Comment

Ugh, I feel like shit today. I popped half a muscle relaxant, but I’m hungover, confused, and perhaps depressed. Fuck it. This is the wine with the rooster on the label, and its a great buy. Dark, smooth, plummy with a hint of leathery chocolate. Not too complex, but I’ll take it. Bring on the weekend!

2002 Ramsay North Coast Pinot Noir

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under Pinot Noir, Red wines, Reviews, Wine Reviews, style | Leave a Comment

Wow! This was recommended as a Manager’s Pick at thinking man’s liquor store Twin Liquors. The first sip is stupendous. Chocolatey, BBQ’y, great lasting finish. For the price, this is unbelievable. It certainly beat my expectations. Like going to a gay bar, getting really drunk, and taking home what you think is a transvestite, but it turns out to be an actual woman! Wow, I can’t stop thinking about it.

(Editor’s note: The wine, not the transvestite)

2002 Norton Malbec

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under Malbec, Reviews, South American wines, Wine Reviews, region, style | Leave a Comment

Justin says: Tastes like clay. Tasty, grapey clay. See, I don’t see what people see in reds. They’re fine. Bitter. Enjoyable. But where’s the pizzazz? The wham-bam-thank you-ma’am? This is, in truth, a very enjoyable wine, but I like Chardonnays. So blow me!

Brandy says, “Thick and rich with dark plums and warm hues” (she really said this!) “Reds rock and bring warm love to the world—very earthy and challenging for the sophisticated palate.” (Was that a dig?)

Russ says: Nota bene: I am biased towards Argentine Malbec. Tastes like clay? Well, la tierra del Argentina is fine by me. Qualities to look for in a Malbec: earthy, non-bitter (read: Spanish), not sweet (read: Shiraz), clears the palate quickly—this wine has these qualities, but not in spades. Good for the money, so give me a sharp, hard cheese.

2002 Kendall Jackson Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under American wines, Chardonnay, Reviews, White wines, Wine Reviews, region, style | Leave a Comment

With Michael Jackson’s child molestation charges making headlines, its nice to see one of the Jackson clan doing something worthwhile. Kendall, who originally played trombone for the group, has transcended his musical beginnings to become quite a well-established wine-maker.

The vitner’s reserve manages to be full, fruity, but not sickeningly sweet. A nice wine for the money. It settles in the back of the thoat, to create a nice buttery finish. Maybe a little tangy, but a nice wine, nonetheless. Now if only Tito could work on that vodka…

2002 Hangtime Pinot Noir

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under American wines, Pinot Noir, Red wines, Reviews, Wine Reviews, region, style | Leave a Comment

Brandy’s back! A pungent aroma. I like this wine. Its mild, pleasant. A good deep-dish pizza wine. Brandy says, “I feel a *pop* in my mouth. This would be good with a carpaccio.”

Later… “What’s a carpaccio?”

2002 Dancing Bull Zinfandel

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under American wines, Red wines, Reviews, Wine Reviews, Zinfandel, region, style | Leave a Comment

Price: $10

This is like a Junior Varsity zinfandel. All the characteristics of a great zin, but nothing blows my mind. Still, for ten bucks, a solid buy, and I dig the name.
