2001 Weinert Carrascal

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under Blend, Red wines, Reviews, South American wines, Wine Reviews, region, style | Leave a Comment

You know, sometimes I think wine flavor descriptions are totally arbitrary. On my wine tour last weekend, they were using phrases like “honeyed vanilla tobacco” and “chocolate-covered cherry.” Ugh. If you find a red wine, that actually tastes like vanilla tobacco, buy me a bottle.

Now, I bring this up because this wine actually mentions and tastes like chocolate. Yum! Its a dark, mysterious, and sensual wine; jazz in an alley. Sort of bitter, but it grows on you. Vino de Nosferatu….

2001 Francis Ford Coppola Syrah

Price: $15

I haven’t done a review in a while, but you haven’t missed much. A great Chardonnay (Newton), but whatever. Trying the syrah, in search of the jammy zinfandel, but this is a little too bright for me.

*sigh*

Can nothing please me? Wait. Getting better. Blueberry vanilla with a side of underwear, anyone?

2001 Llano Texas Chardonnay

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under Chardonnay, Reviews, Texas wines, White wines, Wine Reviews, region, style | Leave a Comment

I finally relented and tried a Texas Chardonnay, cause I have pride and stuff. And its good! First wine that I really taste apple. Green apple. Like a jolly rancher. Nice springtime wine. Brandy likes it more than I do.

Brandy says, “Its nice to know that you’re obsessed with women’s body types now.” Caramel and apple undertones. Unique, much like the Lone Star State itself.

2001 Guy Buffet Cellars Chardonnay

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under American wines, Chardonnay, Reviews, Wine Reviews | Leave a Comment

Can wine truly be refreshing, lemony, and citrusy? Can one ever truly be honest and compassionate? Why do fat girls enjoy oral sex so much more than skinny ones? This wine attempts to answer one of these questions…

A spring bouquet of vibrant fruit. Its buttery, lemony, and oaky. How does it do it? This is a good mid-grade summer wine. As it breathes, the butter takes over. Solid wine. Look out, Napa; Paso Robles is on the map!

2001 Diamond Oaks Chardonnay

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under American wines, Chardonnay, Reviews, White wines, Wine Reviews, region, style | Leave a Comment

HEB’s doing this new thing where they feature “closeout” specials, like its a shitty video game or something. I picked this wine up for $14 down from $18. Let’s see if there’s a method to this closeout madness….

A little sour at first, but fades to oak…nice, toasty finish. I feel like one of the ruling class. Who would have thought that I, Justin Strackany, would one day be drinking $18 bottles of wine. Hail to plutocracy! Still, I cannot forget the little people, and my final grade must be as humble as my roots.

2001 La Crema Chardonnay

Now, I’m completely sober (well, not completely sober), but this is a good-ass wine. Smooth, buttery, not too tart. This is what a Chardonnay should taste like. Brandy, who knows these things, exclaims, “Smooth as a baby’s bottom.”

2001 Black Opal Shiraz

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under Australian wines, Red wines, Reviews, Syrah, Wine Reviews, region | Leave a Comment

It’s sweet! I do taste plum & blackberry. Who knew? Makes me think back to the days on Commonwealth Avenue, shuffling between mulberry bushes, searching for the blackest, sweetest berry. The thing is, if this is a relatively shitty shiraz, what am I missing? How high is the ceiling? All in all, a pleasant experience. Like picking berries all those summers ago. Young, innocent, and immortal….

2001 Berenger Napa Valley Chardonnay

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under American wines, Chardonnay, Reviews, White wines, Wine Reviews, region, style | Leave a Comment

Price: $12

This is one step up from the Founder’s Estate, which I love, labeled as a “honeyed” oak. Let’s give it a sip….

OOH! Its good. Fuller, more buttery flavor than the Estate. Lasts longer. Its good. I’ve forgotten how good wine lingers…

This is normally a $16 bottle, and the best deal around. Better finish than beginning. It doesn’t explode in the mouth, which is my only complaint. Brandy says, “I’m too tired to give a quote”, but when prodded, says, “Spicy flowers.”

2001 Berenger Founder’s Estate Chardonnay

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under American wines, Chardonnay, Reviews, White wines, Wine Reviews, region, style | Leave a Comment

Price: $9

I love this wine. Full, buttery, oak taste. Brandy tastes pear. Good, solid wine. Only problem is its not quite as complex or long-lasting as $20 bottles.
