2002 Ghost Gum Chardonnay

Damn, I dig this wine! Sweeter than one might expect, but there’s an underlying oakiness that keeps it from slipping into $4 hangover territory. Yummy! Australia: More than kangaroos and Midnight Oil, apparently.

Brady says, “I saw a lot of ugly prostitutes one time…”
Brandy also says, “A waterfall of flavor!”

Geyser Peak Sauvignon Blanc

This is the quintessential Sauvignon Blanc. Fruity, crisp, cheap(!), delicious. Highly quaffable. The perfect wine when its FUCKING 100 DEGREES OUTSIDE FOR THE TWENTIETH DAY IN A ROW!!!

(note: For those would-be etymologists out there, the word quintessential is derived from the latin term meaning ‘Fifth Essence’, which is meant to denote the fifth element (apart from Earth, Water, Air, and Fire) that embodies the celestial, heavenly perfection that exists above the moon). Nice, huh?

Firestone Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc

Millions of peaches, peaches for me…this wine has a nice, clean, fruity taste. Heavy peach flavors. I did a tour of wine country last night, learned a lot, and developed a taste for sweet wines, paired with the right foods, of course, so now my mind is open. Millions of peaches, peaches for free…..

2001 Diamond Oaks Chardonnay

HEB’s doing this new thing where they feature “closeout” specials, like its a shitty video game or something. I picked this wine up for $14 down from $18. Let’s see if there’s a method to this closeout madness….

A little sour at first, but fades to oak…nice, toasty finish. I feel like one of the ruling class. Who would have thought that I, Justin Strackany, would one day be drinking $18 bottles of wine. Hail to plutocracy! Still, I cannot forget the little people, and my final grade must be as humble as my roots.

Destino Chardonnay

Ah, Chardonnay. Why have I treated thee so cruelly? Relegated to back-shelf status, while your burgundy cousins shoulder and strut their way to my haughty palette, you are a picture of grace. You bent, dear Chardonnay, but you did not break. And now, it is I who am shamed. For this Chardonnay is wonderful.

It reminds me of everything I used to like about you. Long-lasting, complex finish with aromas of banana and honeysuckle. Peach originally, blending into a floral honey taste that lasts longer than most orgasms. A little bitter at the end, but what isn’t. All in all, a great bet, and a good buy even for $20. Use it during movie night, but only if that movie is Oscar-worthy! Brandy says, “Like a melon with a little bit of cayenne pepper. Like how Mexicans eat fruit.”

2001 La Crema Chardonnay

Now, I’m completely sober (well, not completely sober), but this is a good-ass wine. Smooth, buttery, not too tart. This is what a Chardonnay should taste like. Brandy, who knows these things, exclaims, “Smooth as a baby’s bottom.”

Francis Ford Coppola Gold Label Chardonnay

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under American wines, Chardonnay, Reviews, White wines, Wine Reviews, region, style | Leave a Comment

Price: $15

Okay, watching ‘The Last Samurai’, eating popcorn, and now I’m drinking Francis Ford Coppola’s wine. While its true that this is the man who directed The Godfather, this is also the man who directed ‘Tucker: The Man and His Dream.’ Which wine will we get? Let’s find out!

First sip…oooh, good, fruity, but full. A little keroseney, but I can forgive it. Its sweet. The bottle mentions guava, which I think is pushing it, but whatever. All in all, a very good wine. Not “The Godfather”, per se, but worthy of a sequel.

2003 Brancott Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blancs are my absolute fave right now. This one is no exception. I love how forward the fruit is. Melon, grapefruit rinds, banana, and crisp (not too sweet). You have to be careful what you pair with it, cause it can be easily overpowered, but for a cool sip after work on a hot summer’s day, I’ll take this puppy over a Miller Lite anyday of the week and twice on Sundays!

2001 Berenger Napa Valley Chardonnay

Posted on September 13, 2009 - Filed Under American wines, Chardonnay, Reviews, White wines, Wine Reviews, region, style | Leave a Comment

Price: $12

This is one step up from the Founder’s Estate, which I love, labeled as a “honeyed” oak. Let’s give it a sip….

OOH! Its good. Fuller, more buttery flavor than the Estate. Lasts longer. Its good. I’ve forgotten how good wine lingers…

This is normally a $16 bottle, and the best deal around. Better finish than beginning. It doesn’t explode in the mouth, which is my only complaint. Brandy says, “I’m too tired to give a quote”, but when prodded, says, “Spicy flowers.”

2001 Berenger Founder’s Estate Chardonnay

Price: $9

I love this wine. Full, buttery, oak taste. Brandy tastes pear. Good, solid wine. Only problem is its not quite as complex or long-lasting as $20 bottles.
