2009 Halloween Wine Bar Crawl
Posted on September 30, 2009 - Filed Under Upcoming Events | 3 Comments
On January 2nd of this year, The Austin Winos engaged in a very fun exploratory mission of the wine bars of Downtown Austin. This included 3 2oz. pours at 6 of Austin’s best wine bars. The average bottle price was about $40, and everyone had a great time.
With one small exception.
We were so drunk by the end, no one even made it to the last bar.Oops.So, this year, we’re increasing the quality of the wine, reducing the quantity only slightly, and finishing up at Max’s for their Reverse Happy Hour. Here are the details:>
When: Friday, October 30th — 7:30 – 12:30
What: Wine tasting at 5 downtown wine bars: Aquarelle, Cru, Max’s, Mulberry, and Cork & Co.
What’s to drink: We’ll be buying bottles averaging $80 a piece, and many of them will be over $100. And we’ll be pouring 2 big pours a wine bar. That’s ten glasses of $80 wine!
How much? 10 glasses of reserve wine, a commemorative Austin Winos glass, and a costume party at Max’s to finish up the night.
Do I have to wear a costume? Nope, but we’ll have a prize for the best costume…

2007 Savanha Cabernet Sauvignon

I found this wine a little thin and tannic. I think, paired with a hard cheese or meaty pasta, it would have been pretty tasty, but tonight was a steak night, and steak nights are important to me.
Sorry Savanha, but you didn’t quite cut the mustard…

5.99!
5.99!
That’s how much this wine cost!
It was very quaffable, great with pizza, and a very solid weekday wine. Highly recommended for when you’re broke or when people who don’t know much about wine are in town.

Life is so good.
This movie…so good. Aaron Copeland’s score is perfect. The emotion & humanity…so pin-point. The performances are classic, the storyline, devine…they truly don’t make movies like this. Can you imagine asking Aaron Copeland to score your movie?
The wine…A 2007 Spanish Syrah / Tempranillo blend from Care..with hints of caramel, cedar, rusty pipe, strawberry, and seltzer water, rated 90 pts WS…
It’s just okay.

This puppy is $19.99 @ Westwood Liquors and worth every penny! It’s mellow, confident, with nice flavors of cocoa, blueberry and medium tannins.
If this wine were a guy at a party, he would just sit in the corner wearing sunglasses, and not saying anything, but then at the end of the night he would take your girlfriend home.

This is a subtle cotes du rhone with mild tannins, and a very pleasant, perfumy taste. Nice hints of lavendar, hazelnut, and honey blossom…but I find myself wishing for a little more bite.

Now this wine I like!
Good round, rich flavor, with the hints of earth and spice that I really enjoy in a malbec. A gem @ 14.99.
2006 Louis M Martini Cabernet

They sell the shit out of this wine every you go. It sports some high rating from some place, and you can get it for $12.99. I found it to be thin, obnoxious, and generally lacking in flavor or uniqueness. I poured it down the sink.
Comment of the night: “This wine tastes like it was made by the same person who made Two Girls One Cup.”
Good times…

This wine is from Southern Spain, and 90 pts for $15 @ Central Market.
I found it to have some nice notes of cedar, spice box, and brine.
Sara says, “It smells like terrible.”
E Guigal 2005 Cotes Du Rhone

This wine was $12.50 @ Spec’s, which is a great value. Has the typical hazelnut, earth and mild tannins, if a little tart. This wine starts off a little tight, and should be opened for 90 minutes or so to really enjoy.
